Ingredients
Scale
- 6 slices Bread (Cubed; any bread works, but challah or brioche is recommended)
- 3 cups Fresh apples (Peeled and chopped; choose sweet varieties like Honeycrisp or Fuji)
- 4 Large eggs (Ensure they are at room temperature for better mixing)
- 1 cup Milk (Use whole, 2%, or almond milk for a dairy-free option)
- 1/2 cup Sugar (Granulated is standard, but brown sugar adds a deeper flavor)
- 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract (Pure vanilla extract is best for a more authentic taste)
- 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon (This spice enhances the apple flavor beautifully)
- 1/4 teaspoon Salt (Balances sweetness)
- 1/4 cup Melted butter (For drizzling on top before baking)
- Powdered sugar (For serving, optional, for adding a touch of sweetness when serving)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- Whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
- Add the cubed bread and chopped apples to the egg mixture and stir until well combined.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and drizzle with melted butter.
- Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
- Cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
Notes
Use stale bread to enhance texture; it absorbs the custard better than fresh bread. Let the casserole sit overnight for deeper flavor infusion.
