Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup Water (Use unsalted water for optimal flavor enhancement.)
- 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter (Can substitute with salted butter but reduce added salt.)
- 1 cup All-purpose Flour (Gluten-free flour can be used for a gluten-free option.)
- 4 Large Eggs (Room temperature eggs will mix in better.)
- 1 cup Grated Gruyère Cheese (Substitute with cheddar for a sharper taste.)
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt (Adjust to taste if using salted butter.)
- 1/4 teaspoon Black Pepper (White pepper can be used for a smoother texture.)
- 1/4 teaspoon Nutmeg (optional)(This adds warmth and depth of flavor.)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Combine in a saucepan, water, butter, and salt; bring to a boil over medium heat.
- Stir in flour until the mixture forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan.
- Cool slightly for 5-10 minutes.
- Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition until fully incorporated.
- Incorporate grated Gruyère cheese, black pepper, and nutmeg if using, until evenly distributed.
- Shape spoonfuls of the batter onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them about 1 inch apart.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until puffed and golden brown.
Notes
Ensure the water and butter mixture reaches a rolling boil before adding flour; this activates the gluten. Use a cookie scoop for evenly sized puffs, and avoid opening the oven door while baking.
