Crispy Fried Green Tomatoes

Crispy Fried Green Tomatoes are a Southern classic that’s crunchy on the outside and tangy on the inside, making them a fantastic appetizer or side dish.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 green tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Remoulade sauce or dipping sauce of choice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Slice the green tomatoes into even rounds and season both sides lightly with salt and pepper.
  2. Dip each tomato slice into the buttermilk so it gets a thin, even coating.
  3. Dredge the buttermilk-coated slices in the cornmeal and flour mixture until fully covered.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat and fry the tomato slices until golden brown, about 3–4 minutes per side.
  5. Remove the fried tomatoes and drain on paper towels; serve hot with remoulade or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Use firm, unripe green tomatoes for best results. Fry in batches to avoid crowding the pan and losing crispiness.
