A comforting and hearty casserole combining layers of ground beef, sliced potatoes, and melted cheese, perfect for family meals.

  • Total Time: 75 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb Ground beef (Lean mix 85/15 preferred)
  • 4 medium Potatoes (Russet or Yukon gold, peeled and thinly sliced)
  • 1 medium Onion (Finely chopped)
  • 1 to 2 cups Shredded cheese (Cheddar or mozzarella, freshly shredded recommended)
  • ½ cup Milk (For creaminess and binding)
  • 2 tbsp Butter (Melted)
  • Salt (To taste)
  • Pepper (To taste)
  • Garlic powder (To taste)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190 °C).
  2. Place the ground beef in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it apart and cooking for 7 to 10 minutes or until fully browned.
  3. Once the beef is browned, drain the excess fat.
  4. Return the skillet to the heat and add the chopped onion, sautéing for 3 to 4 minutes until it becomes translucent.
  5. Sprinkle salt, pepper, and garlic powder over the beef-onion mix, stirring for another minute.
  6. While the beef mixture is cooking, peel and slice the potatoes as thinly as possible.
  7. In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, lay half of the potato slices, seasoning lightly with salt and pepper.
  8. Spread the beef-onion mixture evenly over the potato layer.
  9. Add the remaining potato slices on top of the beef mixture.
  10. In a small bowl, whisk together the milk and melted butter, then pour it over the layered ingredients.
  11. Sprinkle 1 to 2 cups of shredded cheese evenly over the top.
  12. Cover the baking dish with foil and place it in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  13. After 45 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15 to 20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly.
  14. Probe the potatoes with a fork to ensure they are tender.
  15. Once baked, let the casserole rest for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use freshly shredded cheese for the best melting quality. Consider experimenting with different types of potatoes or adding vegetables for added flavor.
